When you travel some 48km from Axum along the main road to Adigrat, you will come in to contact with the village of Inticho. 25km beyond the village, you will see Debre Damo perching on the flat topped mountain. You can give it a try to the two-hour stiff uphill walk to a cliff at the top of which is the ancient monastery of Debre Damo. There is existing intact church which is believed to be chosen by Abune Aregawi for his solitary life. It is strongly believed that God commanded snake which stretched down from the top and lifted up Abune Aregawi to the monastery. Aregawi is one of the nine saints who came from Syria in the 16th century.
