If you would like to enjoy visiting Ras Dejen, the highest mountain in Ethiopia, and wonder as well at Ethiopian flagship animals and birds, come to Simien Mountains National Park, the UNESCO registered world heritage. The park is found in the northern part of Ethiopia in Amhara region, 820km from Addis Ababa. Debark is the base from which you explore Semen Mountains National park. The dry season from December to March is the best time to visit the place. The Park was established in 1969 to protect Ibex and other endemic species. There are various types of bird species including endemic ones in the park.
Vehicle transport through Bahir Dar and Gondar, and the daily flight of Ethiopian Airlines are optional means of transport to get to Simien Mountains National Park.
- The climb to Ras Dashen summit
Trekking is the major activity you enjoy at the park. If you think you are fit, climb the summit of Ras Dashen, 4600m high. In fact, the final 100 meters to the summit requires some rock climbing experience. In addition, the climb back up Bwahit (4200m) after several days of serious trekking is often too much for some people. Trekkers who are not sure that they can get back should not attempt this mountain. As with most mountains, the cloud can become thick and stormy in the afternoons, so it is best to ascend and descend the summit before late afternoon. The views are magnificent, Semen Wolves can often be seen right up to the summit.
